Fifth grade Math starts the year working with the Math strand of Number Sense. We are doing activities involving place value, rounding, estimation and computation. The students are also practicing their facts again this year with their Weekly Packets and will soon begin Rocket Math. Our goal at the beginning of this year is to better understand numbers and be able to work with them quickly and accurately.
In Social Studies, the students will be learning the 50 states by regions. They will have a quiz on each region. We also will be learning about the physical features of the United States. The students will be attending the Civil War reenactments here in Fort Recovery on September 10th. We will be viewing a live artillery show and a battle. They will also see many different presentations throughout the day. The students are very excited.

In science students will be learning about ecosystems. On September 14th students will travel to the Brukner Nature Center in Troy to observe a water ecosystem and learn about the beauty of the earth.

Not only will they be learning grammar, increasing their vocabularies, and spelling new words, they will also be reading and writing stories about nature’s fury. They will read a book about a real tornado system, and then use their research skills to find out more about the community it destroyed. They will also use technology to make a presentation about other storms in nature. .t promises to be a very educational start of the school year.
